HOW TO TAKE BODY MEASUREMENT FOR SEWING AND MEASUREMENT BASICS

How to take body measurements

How to take the body measurement using tape.

How to take body measurement

The inch tape can be used to take measurements, the inch tape range from 0 to 60.

Firstly,
Keep the 0 inch line in between the shoulder and the neck, and keep the tape vertically; to get all the length of the woman or body. (Don't forget to jot it down).

Second step,
Still keep the tape at that juncture and get the measurement of the BUST and write it down (i.e from shoulder to nipple). To get the bust in any measurement, just locate the NIPPLE  of the lady and that's the measurement for the BUST.

Third step,
The tape still at that juncture, get the measurement of the under-bust. (i.e from shoulder to under-bust) To get a correct BODY MEASUREMENT, make sure the tape goes under the lady's bust very well and it will be accurate and write it down.

Fourth step ,

The tape still in between the shoulder and neck, stretch the tape down as if you want it to touch the floor. Then take the measurement of the WAIST.
HOW TO GET THE PERFECT WAIST FOR BODY MEASUREMENT:
Every lady or girl must have a place where her CURVE lies. To get where the curve of a lady is; check by the side of the lady between the UNDER BUST and the WAIST.
Waist in DRESS MAKING  is actually were the curve of a lady is and not the actual waist that everyone knows

Fifth step,
The tape still at that point and stretched down, the get the HALF LENGTH  of either the blouse or the gown. TO GET THE HALF LENGTH OF A WOMAN:
Just locate the NAVEL / BELLY BUTTON of the woman. If it is difficult to find, Then check right after the WOMAN'S CURVE and voila the NAVEL / BELLY BUTTON is found. The half length of a lady is mostly needed in dress making especially for a lady. The half length of a lady is mostly needed in gown because a gown has a longer length and the length of gown do varies, either from 40 (for a short gown or for a short woman) to 65 (for a long gown or for a tall woman), while a BLOUSE has a particular length (not always). The half length is exactly where the navel is or where the curve stops.

Sixth step,
To get the hips of a lady (i.e from shoulder to half length of the lady) while marking and cutting the cloth just add up 7 or 8 inches to the length of the half length (i.e lenght of the shoulder to the half length) Or minus 7 or 8 inches for the length of the SHOULDER TO THE KNEE. (not always correct) Example, if the length of the shoulder to the half length  is 28 then the length of the shoulder to the hips is automatically (28 + 7 = 35) or  (28 + 8 =36)
To get the length of the shoulder to the knee, the tape still in between the shoulder and the neck; stretch it down to the knee of the lady and jot it down.

NOTE:

But mind you, when marking and cutting a SKIRT; if the length of the waist to the knee is 25 while marking the knee on your cloth do not mark that exact 25 remove or minus 2 inches. That 2 inches removed enables the lady to walk well. If the 2 inches is not removed from a skirt, then such lady will be having difficulty in walking. And no designer will want that.

Seventh step,
To get the full length of the gown or skirt. If it is a short skirt or the length of the skirt is above the knee; then the step 6 above is not necessary but if its a long skirt or the length of the skirt is touching the ground, then the step 6 is very very important.

TAKING  BODY MEASUREMENTS FOR SEWING

                      Taking body measurement for sewing

0-1= length of the dress

0-2= waist length

3-4= shoulder

4-5= sleeve length
5-6= round arm
0-a line= front neck depth (similarly for back)

a- Chest
b- Waist                 Around the body
c- Hip
d- Round neck

Eighth step,
To get the shoulder, from the above description (i.e 3-4). Keep the tape horizontally and measure from the joint of the right hand (shoulder) to the joint of the left hand (shoulder). And record it down.

Last step,
Get the sleeve length, it can either be long sleeve, short sleeve or three quarters sleeves. Check the above diagram for illustration

ROUND MEASUREMENT IN DRESS MAKING.

How to take body measurement

To get the bust :

Take the tape round the woman breast especially at the point of the nipple to get the exact measurement of the bust.
NOTE:
When the tape has been taken round the woman's Breast, make sure that the tape at the back is raised Up to the two bones at the back, to make it balanced and accurate.

To get the under bust:
Take the tape round the body exactly Under the breast of the woman. Take the tape as high as possible to get the accurate under bust measurement.

To get the waist:
Take the tape round the narrowest point in the body(check out the fourth step on how to locate the curve or waist of a lady or wonan). It's usually just above the navel.
NOTE :
while taking any round measurement, make sure you use only two (2) fingers i.e the Thumb and index finger; to hold the tape while taking measurements so as to get the exact measurement. But if all the fingers are included in the measurement, then it will be incorrect.

To get the half lenght measurement:
Take the tape round the navel. If necessary

To get hips:
Take the tape round the largest or widest pare (i.e the hipbone). And record it down.

To get round sleeve:
Check the above diagram (i.e 5 - 6). Make the tape go round the arm of the woman. If the sleeve lenght is 10 then the round sleeve measurement will be taken at that exact sleeve lenght mark.
